This is the official thread to ask all of your questions about the legitimacy of your prop weapon. (2012 edition)
A few notes about ALL answers given in this topic:
- All judgments are the opinion of the person replying, and CAN NOT be used as an official argument to the person at weapons check who is telling you no.
- We don't have your prop/weapon in hand on this page, a few good pictures can go a long way, but sometimes the one thing that makes it not work for the convention doesn't appear to us until we see it in person
- If a member of Metrocon Security tells you "Not allowed," you may appeal to the weapons check or to a member of the core staff... But the people who are given Security passes were given them for a reason, and we will listen to their reasoning. (That is not to say that they are never wrong, but most of the time they are not)
- If your approved weapon is used in an un-approved manner or is deemed a nuisance, we will still ask you to remove it from the convention. Failure to act upon such warning can, and almost certainly will result in further action, which could entail expulsion from the convention.
That all said, you may find the Metrocon Weapons Policy at http://www.metroconventions.com/control.cfm?ID=693, if you still have a question, ask away and our team of experts will gladly provide our opinion.
Last years thread can be found at http://www.animemetro.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23010 for reference.

The costume I'm thinking about needs an full size ax. The handle is wood, but it has a foam head. Yay or Nay?

Hello~ I plan on cosplaying as the male version of black rock shooter and it will require some metal chains that will surround my body and the weapon. Will the chains in this case be allowed? Here is a reference picture for what I am talking about

Thanks in advance!

What's visible in the picture appears to be a significant length of loose chain, I am going to say no. I do know that most halloween stores sell rather inexpensive plastic/foam chain that isn't very expensive (and would end up being significantly lighter).
yes, we do tend to allow chains of various gauges and lengths, but they cannot be used to connect people (ie collars) and they cannot pose a hazard to others. If you have an image that better illustrates how your costume would better fit those rules I would be more than happy to take another look.

Oh right, that picture didn't show much of the actual chain that would be used. Sorry bout that xD Here's a better picture

From what it looks, it looks like it only surrounds the hand/sword and no where else on the body.
Thanks again!

After a brief round table discussion we are of the opinion that a metal chain of the type shown is not within a liberal interpretation of the rules, and even as a stand alone prop (no sword attached) would be asked to be removed. You can thank the street gangs of the 70's and 80's for turning harmless chains into legitimate weapons for that one.

I dont exactly have a way to upload a picture of it but i have a cardboard sword that has a (increadably dull) 4 to 5 inch long bit of metal runing along the blade. Is that ok?

Alright, so.
Two weapons, maybe three.
The first is a Airsoft M1911, Full Metal. Only actions are the cock-back on the slide and the magazine realease. Has a bright orange barrel/tip and is visible further when cocked back.
The second is a full metal Airsoft SVD, Pumpkin Orange tip [ Only orange I found at Walmart, had to spray paint tip as some dolt covered it up.]
The last is not even made yet, but might be a PVC pipe prop of a PTRS-41, should have no moving parts aside from maybe a top part to move up and act as a secret stash for snacks. Would be a rather large prop weapon however.

Lordbralix: First off, that link didn't work for me for some reason, just took me to facebook. Second off, by your description of why the metal is there, you not only have the heaviest piece towards the tip of the blade, but you plan on dragging it around the convention center as you walk. So once again, sounds like a pretty clear no to me.
TheSpectre: Those all sound like they fall within our guidelines for prop guns, just make sure to leave your pellets at home and be ready for us to zip tie back the triggers. If your PVC ends up resembling an actual weapon I would suggest orange tipping it, and if it looks like a potato gun, place make sure the barrel is securely plugged.

Ok so I got the metal off the tip miraculously without damaging the actual sword. Should it be ok now? I don't see why not but you can never be to safe.

Hi there! I'm going to bringing an airsoft AK47. It is all plastic, orange tip, and fires plastic pellets. I was a bit confused by the FAQs, I was under the impression that I have to remove the magazine and leave it home, even if it's empty, and make a fake one instead? The magazine is a big part of the shape of the gun, so I would just like to ask here too, would I be allowed to keep the magazine in it, or do I have to make one myself? Thanks!

Alright, so had a few of these come in while I was working, let's get them answered!
Lordbralix: Sorry for the inconvenience, yes, it should be fine now.
Sparkleee-Sprinkle: I'm not sure how this one will be ruled by our check person, and unfortunately the next time I'll be near the internet after talking with her will be after the show has started. I would suggest ensuring that you have absolutely no ammo, and bringing along the magazine to see if it passes. I think it might but I am on entirely too little sleep to be quoted on that.
Kick Hopper: The wooden one should be fine as is, the PVC one will requite an orange tip. Removable should be alright, but make sure it is secure as if we spot it without the tip, it will need to go. And even though we are nice about transgressions fairly often, by technicality our policy says that you would have to go as well. (aka, if you lose the tip and don't realize it, pray that we've been having a good day up to that point.)
