On the Metrocon contacts list there should be someone designated for contact in regards for Press Passes (Registration, Shannon Fazio I believe). That is probably the route for the type of access you are looking for.

I figured this out when some people came up to my booth in the artist alley (where I was also selling real tails and other real furs) and they started saying how they were opposed to fur. Then I pointed out to them that they were wearing fox tails. They said "no, these are fake...at least thats what we were told in the dealer's room" so I had to show them that their own tails were real, and they were NOT happy to find that out.
Vendors should not lie about the products they are selling, because the anti-fur people who bought the real tails were really upset about it once they found out. I can't say I really support animal rights people, but I would not falsely advertise my product to make them buy items they ordinarily wouldn't. That isn't good business ethics by any means.
I'm not sure exactly which vendor was doing this, since I couldn't really get into the dealer's room, but its just something to know about for the future.
I on the other hand, was completely honest about all my fur products being real, and I STILL got a ton of sales. Sellers never have to lie.
Other than that issue, though, I personally had no other problems and will be back next year with more REAL fox tails! :)
i was in the dealer room where they were selling the fox tail personaly i own a sliver fox tail before i bought a 2nd one a few people knewthat there were real fox tail and not fake there was alot of people that didn't know that they were real but that dealer did lie to congoers about the fox tail that wasn't right for them to do that

Hey everyone. Thank you all for coming out this year. There is a lot going on in this thread and Ben is doing a fine job with your questions. The one thing no one has commented on is that the price of a vendor space did NOT increase this year at all. If a vendor said that theu were mistaken. The difference was that we had so many vendors trying to get in the room that a lot of them could only get one space. I guess they should get in earlier next year and pay on time to avoid this problem. If you have any questions reguarding the chess match or anything else for that matter feel free to email me metrochessdirector@yahoo.com. I do my best to respond to every email I get.

Alright so I'm a little late posting this, but I've been busy with work and what not. Moving along!
Having missed the 2010 Metrocon year I was super excited to attend the 2011 year, even if I wound up by myself. It was my fifth ever Metrocon (Been attending since 2006)
I honestly had a lot of fun. For the first year I got my badge a day early and it honestly made things MUCH easier by doing this and props for doing it as well guys.
Ill start with the Masquerade. Good variety of music and I loved how they left open an area to get up close to the stage so to take pictures without being part of the press coverage group. I honestly thought it was a wonderful job all together and it was enjoyable. There were seats in the back if you got tired of standing or didn't want to dance which was nice that you left them out so people didn't have to walk all the way up to the stands where a lack of sight on the stage would take place. If you hadn't known the story line from last year, I can see how it could get a little confusing on what was going on (I watch jade's group so I found where he had uploaded most of it). After seeing that I understood it outside of not knowing the characters, but I could follow the story regardless.
Next is the Chess Match. I had auditioned for this myself so I know what it physically and mentally takes to be able to take a chance in this and regardless of anything that might have went wrong, I thought the whole crew did excellent, including Integra and her broken wrist. I went on both days and after so many years, you know that there are bound to be mistakes, as we're all human and they were expected to remember two hours of information by memory. Those who complain about characters without mics, generally if they are just a one fight kind of character, they aren't necessarily needed and their dialogue isn't vital to the match itself. Getting their microphones on and off stage would add up and eat into their two hour limit. Also while standing in line, I heard many others complaining that, on Saturday, it was taking an additional half hour to get everyone into the room just to sit down. They had to do a LOT of set up for this and you can usual expect some delays.
Honestly my only complaint about the Chess Match was on Saturday with the line and how we were all formed into a certain pattern before being pushed against the walls where people took a chance to cut in front of others. I was okay with this in the end because I knew there was a lot of open seating.
Next up is the fire show. Its a half an hour show, but I enjoyed it. Clearly everyone stood back further with their fire than I recall as the last year I went (One Piece themed year), they were really close and you could REALLY feel the heat, but I can understand so many precautions with people so close. I heard people complaining that they weren't allowed to stand by the river itself but that's a risk to the performers. They stood close to that edge, swinging fire about and had tools over there. It's clearly a safety precaution as is the yellow rope.
After that comes the panels ran by us, the volunteers. There are expected hitches in every panel, but I liked all of the ones I went to and enjoyed it very much so. All the ones I went to (Parle included) ran very well. All the panels ended on time and started on time which is good that everyone knew they had to finish out an extra five to ten minutes early to allow the next person to set up.
All in all, I loved it. Ben, Nick, and Alex all did a wonderful job! I had no problems with security, nor the Umbrella Corps guys, I saw no issues of yelling or of the sort despite a lot of walking around. I didn't hear any complaints in the vendor's room either and the artists seemed to be enjoying themselves a lot.
Keep up the good work you guys!

Haha! I did a horrible job, but thank you for the myriad of compliments, I'm certain the various directors are also quite pleased with them.
Your issue with lines for the chess match is unfortunate, and is also rather unfortunately not quite easily remedied. We actually run into similar problems with most of the main events just due to the sheer number of people. Our solution so far has been to allow a general line to form as it may, and then try to ensure some measure of order is maintained, this of course is a much "fairer" system than many theater setups where everyone mingles as close as they can to the doors and then rushes in. One thing you can always trust in people to do though is to be douche-bags should the opportunity arise.
The setup for the fire show also has an extra safety feature built in by pressing against the riverside rail, should a catastrophic event occur, we can push the person or persons over the edge putting them out quickly. (Just a joke, our safety crew is very well trained and would be hard pressed to let a problem reach that stage of fixing.)

"...and we've tried a few thus far, including a "celebrity" DJ" Yeah... Never underestimate the power of supposedly high demand / high skill DJ's to essentially throw a mix CD in and claim to be good at what they do. Never having that one back again. For reference, I don't get to go into the rave for the vast majority of the night as I am too busy doing more important things for the rave, but when I can tell there is a hack on stage from outside the doors, there might be an issue :P

I had fun at the rave.. And I just stood in the tech booth and watched Tech James do lighting. I also watched the dance floor ya know.. For important things ;>__>
I was super happy when Fax played "The Device has been modified" For closing. I figured it's be a perfect rave song but I didn't bring it up..lol.. But he played it later and I was like.

Good job fax.. I like you and your raves..
And you don't delay the rave forever just because you want to put up your own blow up TV screen in the middle of the stage when we have two screens that are bigger on both sides of the stage.. I thought it was going to be cool for all that effort.. It was just the windows media player random moving BG.. :|

Actually if I am not mistaken, Hellroy uses a pretty decent visualization software suite (Noise Cradle), and we didn't really delay too long this year, at least not compared to those of Metro's past.

LOL.. It still had the whole ballroom staff freaking out.. Like security would come to us and be like ETA? And we'd just be standing there like "what can we do they insist on setting this up. And haven't even done a sound check" And leave.. And come back again in a few minutes.. and leave... and come back... 3:
But no we have gotten much much better on our delays. :] Are we still famous for being horribly not on time anymore? I haven't heard anyone say anything about it lately.

Ugh the worst thing about going to any ballroom event is the horrible wait and delayed entrance. I plan my weekend events and panels to a T and the delay to get into these ballroom events is just unacceptable :P <333

Thanks Ben! I always knew that if I stuck around here long enough and got to know the people on the "inside" I'd eventually get special treatment. I never would have guessed it would have been so soon and with such a generous offer :)

This was my second year at Metrocon and I had a much better time than last year. We brought our 2 year old and she had a blast. She enjoyed seeing all the costumes and dancing with all the random groups that broke out throughout the center. One of the security guys was very helpful. We came in via the bridge to the hotel attached to the convention center and couldn't find an elevator. The guy helped us carry our child's stroller down the stairs. We did eventually find the elevator but it didn't bother us that the guy didn't know where it was. He was still very helpful.
One concern I did run into was during the signing for the special guests. Even though the time on the signing for one particular guest was 2 hours, if you came in an hour after it started you weren't allowed in line. I had had no warning that if you weren't there right away you wouldn't get to meet the guest. This might have been only an issue for this specific guest, I don't know. He was the main one we were interested in seeing this year. Things worked out for us, due to a very nice lady in charge, but I wonder if there was a better way to schedule everyone's event guides to reflect the necessity to be there within the first hour.

The issue with the guest signing times is the same with almost any other event, a large number of people want to join in on the fun. Our liaison department has it down to a science about how many people (insert guest here) can handle in the time allotted, so we started capping off the lines at a certain point to make sure we didn't end up with too many "I was here on time and stood in line for hours" complaints. I'm sorry that you did not get a chance to meet (insert guest here), but I hope you get a chance to do so again in the future.

Quistis-chan - I apologize for any mis-communication regarding the guest autograph signings. We forget sometimes that the entire con isn't aware that Scott McNeil's lines have to be shut down almost before he even starts signing. He take so much time with each patron that it does cause concerns. We try our best to make sure everyone gets the autographs they want and the opportunity to meet the guest they want to meet. We also though, must watch out for the guests. Scott is such a marvelous person that if we were to not cap his lines he would end up signing for 3 times the alloted time span - or more and while that is wonderful it would completely exhaust him.
I will take your comments to heart though and possibly in 2012 we could have a disclamer in the guide for his signings that his lines have the possibility of being closed shortly after opening depending on the length of the line. As Ben pointed out, our Guest Liaison department has gotten pretty darn good at figuring out when to close the lines - and I've been handling Scott for a number of years now so I've almost got it down to a science.Quote: Things worked out for us, due to a very nice lady in charge
Awww, Thank you for your kind words towards me. I always try to make sure everyone is happy and has the opportunity to meet Scott. He knows that and appreciates it. He loves his fans.

Wasn't sure where the best place to put this would be (Considered a new thread but this seemed an appropriate spot as well). I think something we the congoers need to work on is picking up after ourselves. Several times while my wife and I were waiting on the elevator I noticed cans, bottles, and candy wrappers discarded into the planters beside the elevator and I heard one person talking about how they had left bottles and such laying around the room. I know we're here to have fun and all, but considering the mass amount of people that leave the day the con ends and even the day after, I think it would be a great help to the housekeepers who have to clean up each and every room and get them looking like new again for the next guest if we tided up as we went along. In your rooms, gather up trash in whatever kind of disposable container you may have (my wife and I use plastic shopping bags) and you can place them in the halls in the morning or by the trashcan in your room to be taken away. This gives you more space for stuff you get during the convention while helping the staff out. When not in your room, if you have trash, hold onto it till you get to a trashcan to dispose of it. Even if the trashcan is full, it's at least in the right spot, easier to manage for the staff, and keeps the rest of the hotel looking nice. The staff "put up with us" (For lack of better phrasing currently) during our stay. The least we can do is to make things a tad easier on them.

I agree the trash problem was horrible this year. I ran around picking up random trash left in the ballroom. I saw trash everywhere. Trash was just oozing from the can by the skywalk bridge.
Continuing..
Metrocon was a huge success. Tech was AMAZING this year. My mind was blown at how amazing the tech was. You could hear every line this year unless someone was mumbling or the crowd was still going on with screaming or clapping. Next years theme is really interesting for interpretation. East v. West. I assume is american animation verses japanese? I'll find out soon enough. I'm glad though since it's a broad theme and is no longer stuck to one certain genre. You can have a multitude of characters from more broad source of genres.
Once again... OMG TECH... and OMG RAVE... This rave was the first rave to make me WANT to rave. I've always enjoyed watching the raves but never had an urge to actually rave until this year. The crowd was huge the energy was bigger and it was just so awesome and fun looking. I thought the themes to the raves were an interesting take. Also I don't think we had any major problems this year with our rave this year! Least none that I heard of!! BRAVO guys!! See you can have fun without dropping it on the dance floor.
I'm not sure if I 100% like the new security team yet either. (maybe about 85-90%) I mean I love the fact that they do their job when others wouldn't. However they come off like an act at the same time with the costumes (which really, you're security at an anime con, are the guns necessary?) It entices many people to take pictures of their cool uniforms. I've goten stuck waiting a few minutes on different occasions with them accepting pictures. Awesome crew for security but it'd be nice if they toned it down a bit. They are security not a show after all.
The dealers room however was kinda boring this year. You had the same stuff over and over. T-shirts, figurines, plushes & keychains, rave gear or steampunk. With the expansion of the hall I was hoping on a more diverse selection but in the end everything looked the same and nothing stood out so I never bought anything from there. I only bought one thing and it came from artist alley.
As for the new advertised Asylum. I haven't really found myself with enough motivation to go. I mean you can get the same gory stuff at metro just not in mass quantities. And if it's not going to be family friendly pg13 I think a hentai session should be included since it's a popular question asked. Jus' sayin'.
Over-all with what little I've seen this year I was amused. It was a very solid year for metrocon. Like everyone got their stuff together and held it there for all 3 days.
And this has been my 4th year help making the con run efficiently. I love the ballroom and call it my home, however I officially have to take a step back for next year. I think 4/6 metro's is enough to say I can go back to being an attendee again (at least for a year) Year after year I miss a majority of metrocon. I want to see my first full fireshow, and I want to see my first full metro star party and many things in between. ^-^ (seriously, never seen either in their entirety) I also made a rage face....
