So it's been a few days and everyone has had time to go home and rest parts of their body they didn't even think could hurt so much.
This year was a success.
1. Our attendance increased roughly 1,000 more. Love you guys. 2. Metrocon had it's LARGEST BLACKOUT RAVE (and no one collapsed ironically) 3. Our lovely mascots were fun to have around and did awesome things compared to previous years where you didn't really see them around (or was it just me? Either way they were amazing) 4. Theme next year is Agents vs. Outlaws
So onwards with what you liked. Think we can improve. etc. Babble away my friends.

hehe, thank god for online forums, my voice is SHOT from this crazy weekend! I've been coming to metro since day one, and I can honestly say this was one of the most fun ones. Me and my husband had a total blast. Anyone who didn't go to the roasting royally missed out. I'm already psyched for next years con, and am chomping at the bit to find out who the guests will be. ATM my hubby is sorting through all the business cards we picked up and checking their sites. Normal post-metro ritual for us. I think my fave thing that I bought was a nyan-tardis and a plushie of a cat with a mouse on its head. Took them to my parents house to show them and had to explain nyan-cat to my dad. :) that was entertaining.

A few gripes:
The rave was meh. The DJ was absolutely terrible. To be blunt. It was great seeing everyone there, but if you noticed, the ravers left after about an hour or two. As soon as the song would reach the drop, the DJ would just slam the crossfader to the breakdown of the next song. Djing is so easy now-a-days I don't know how someone can be that bad... Please don't have him back next year.
The "Cosplay Photography" panel was horrible too. The panelists barely knew what they where talking about. I bet their cameras are set in "P" 24/7. I had to leave because I couldn't stop facepalming at the fact that they got a panel not knowing squat about how a camera works.
The panels seemed to be a bit unorganized as a whole...
My Raves: Everything else rocked! The concert was awesome, minus the poor soundsystem. I'm doing a remix of one of Random Encounters tracks. Cool guys, and girl.
I met a lot of video and photo people. The staff was really nice and friendly! Lines moved quick and in an orderly fashion. The build a mech was fun as hell, chess match was cool. I didn't really get the story, mostly because I was my first Metrocon. The cameraman, not so much. I enjoyed the dealer room, lots of very cool stuff. Artists alley was alright.
Overall it is totally worth it and I plan to be back next year. The good outweighs the bad and things can only improve. Since you guys got an added 800-1000 people, I wonder how next year will be like. Will there ever be an implementation on the site for user photos and videos?

Thanks for the feedback LookingGlass,
I will be sure to pass on your notes to the various department heads, I am sure they will appreciate it. The panels are actually quite well organized, especially considering what the vast majority of them are, fan produced bits in their own areas of enjoyment or expertise. We greatly support submissions of all manner, both professional and amateur and welcome you to add to our lineup in years to come if you would wish. If I remember correctly this year the only panel and event issues we came across were a couple of technical issues with one of our guests which we were unable to satisfactorily resolve.
As for the rave, in 2008 or 9 we had a guest DJ that purportedly held some form of international acclaim, who ended up doing the DJ equivalent of throwing in a Mix CD, of mostly sub-par "hit" tracks... Things of that nature always seem to be hit or miss, one of these years we'll figure out how to predict the outcome before the show.
Thanks for enjoying the show and we look forward to seeing you next year.

It depends. Did you go on Friday or Saturday. The friday rave is never as good as the saturday. It actually took an hour and a half just to get the people IN the rave. So at 12 they were still were pouring in. And still going strong when I left around 2. As Ben said some of our invited DJ's are a hit and miss. We invite the people fans like you suggest. But ShadowFax is our homeboy for the Blackout rave on Sat.
As Ben said panels are ran by people such as yourself. Not staff. So we have no idea how knowledgeable someone is in their panel. The panel staff reads the description and if it seems interesting the staff approves. If you'd like sign up next year.
I agree with you on the cameraman for the events. I was in the Ballroom all weekend. And going to school for Digital Film... Sometimes the position of the camera and the unsteady movements made me cringe. I'd want to go straighten it but it's not my job so I ignored it promptly.
^____^ I saw your videos so I strongly encourage you to host a cosplay photography/video panel or something next year. I'm sure it'd be a hit. Also I recommended you to enter Picture This!

First off I'd like to say that this was my first metrocon and I came with my mom, brother, and his girlfriend....to celebrate my birthday. I have 4 words to sum up this past weekend: BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVERRRRRR!!!!!! ~This also happened to be my brother's girlfriend's first con ever(she knows nothing about anime, we are still trying to teach her that kakashi hatake is NOT from dragonball z -__-") and she said she would definitely love to return to one in the future...so thank you metrocon staff for making her first convention, and my birthday celebration, a weekend to remember ^______^

This was my first time going to Metrocon and it was a blast. Most of the panels and events I went to didn't have any problems. My one gripe is that during the Anime Human Chess Match, I thought there were some audio problems with the microphones. Besides that, nothing really disappointed me. Great con this year, and I hope to return next year.

thebrutesquad, thanks for taking the time to read and passing it on. :D If you guys need a DJ, I'm sure I could get you one that can get the dancefloor moving. I'm a pretty decently known person here in Florida. So I'm sure I can find someone to suggest looking into.
As for the panels comment. I suppose I should be more descriptive. Nearly every panel I went to had some difficulty and/or hitch. I'm not sure if it was planning or just bad luck. Obviously by reading your reply, you're aware of that. xD Other than that the panels where great.
Blueangel, I went to the Blackout rave. The set had no direction. Do a quick search of "Armin van Buren: A State Of Trance". That is how a Trance set should be.
The camera operator was pretty derpy. The white balance was off, the image over exposed, and just derp. The party I went with commented on it too. I'm highly considering doing a panel on cosplay photography. I'll look into picture this. I'm mainly a videographer.
Just as I finish typing this, my video of Metrocon is done uploading. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTahB-WmZg0

Ahhh well glad everyone enjoyed Metro. :]
From the tech booth it looked like everyone enjoyed the blackout rave. I had a hard time keeping a focused watchful eye out since it looked like a lot of fun. But maybe that's just me.
And Ben.... May I add. You need to teach your guys how to talk into a mic. During closing I forgot who.. But he had the mic down to his chest...
How about those projectors guys? A big improvement from last year right?
I'm going to message Nick or Alex later about a few ideas to make next years or the year after more fun for everyone :]

I have to say I was impressed with Metrocon! This was my first time going there. I had a table in the Artist Alley and amazingly, I sold out of inventory by the second day! I did not expect to be so successful with the sales, so I'll definitely be coming back next year with enough inventory to (hopefully) last all three days.
That said, I'm a bit scared of crowds so I didn't go downstairs much. But nevertheless I had a great time looking down off the balcony behind my table and taking pictures and videos of the amazing costumes down there. There was never a boring moment! I've since put some of my pictures/videos together on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDoR0HIhQXY
Anyway, I'll see you all next year! (And MAYBE I'll even work up the courage to wear an actual costume of some sort...)

Let me quickly look up the list of people I do not care about having good microphone skills during the convention.. yup, Every single person on my team is on that list. We are there for a whole lot of reasons and not a one of them is to entertain the crowd.
Also the Rave line on Saturday cleared in just barely over an hour, and as near as we could tell was the longest line we have ever processed, it was hard to gauge though due to the fact that it kept getting longer.

I think this year was probably the one i've had the least amount of fun at. Though not all of it was the fault of the con itself just the overall weekend.
Negatives:
Chessmatch: I wont go into much detail because most of the people on this forum know that I have never liked the chess match. To me what I dislike is the story, it never makes sense to me but that being said I give full props to the chessmatch staff for volunteering their time to put on a good show and the acting is pretty good. Its simply the script that makes my head hurt.
Panels: I know this doesn't have anything to do with the con itself but it seemed all the good and entertaining panels were all on Friday and part of Saturday and some were interfering D: and Sunday was boring other than .hack panel which was pretty fun.
Another negative thing was usually I share a hotel room with anywhere from 8-12 of my good friends which makes the weekend infinite more fun, This year me and my 2 roommates shared a room with Krash from here on the forums. It was still a lot of fun rooming with them but its hard to replace rooming with some of your good friends.
Positives:
Panels: ! The panels that I got to attend this year seemed to be more entertaining than years past, especially the ones that the voice actors were apart of.
Hotel: Our room got upgraded to a conference suite on floor 4 woohoo less elevators.
Food: Ate real food for like the first time in 3 months. Now i'm broke again.
I'm sure there are more positives i'm just drawing a blank x.x

Right to the point then, cause I'm too busy editing photos to go into long-winded ramblings. XD
CHESS MATCH PROS: Alucard. F*#king amazing. Easily the best Alucard I've ever seen, in acting and cosplay, in everything. Especially the first scene when Kabuto "killed" him, and he was grinning wide-eyed at the audience as you heard his voice, then just rose up in a back-bend off the ground. But the acting in general was awesome this year. Integra, Anderson, Wesker, and Morrigan, nice job on the voices/accents especially.
Also, the combat. I've always felt that too many sword battles slow things down, but this year it seems they've really upped the ante. And serious props to Integra for fighting with a broken wrist. I could barely tell. Orochimaru's battle was amazing, and Iori's, and Alice's, and Raphael's... There was lots of variety, and it was pretty much all done fairly awesomely. Oh yeah, and... OH SH*T PYRAMID HEAD. Alright. I'm done.
The sound was a lot better this year, also, which is a major improvement. Except for a couple spots where people were speaking without a mike at all, I think I could hear just about everything. Also, on the videos beforehand, it was a lot easier to hear them as well.
CHESS MATCH CONS: Plot. Um, okay, I vaguely know why they were fighting, but there seemed to be an awful lot of fighting-for-the-hell-of-it, including the aforementioned Pyramid Head. And Nemesis. And that whole Resident Evil fight. And Anderson vs Alucard. Don't get me wrong, the fights were awesome, they just seemed to happen for no reason. This certainly isn't the first year that's happened, but I just didn't get it.
I think that's about it. The one downside may be a pretty major one, but the good definitely outweighs the bad and there was a lot of improvement. Good Job.
MASQUERADE PROS: Thanks to everyone who had a hand in the first proposal of the night, since that was two of my very good friends. Thank you guys for making that night so special for them.
That fight/dance between Hime and I-No was pretty awesome, though it definitely wasn't PG-13 (go Kristin!). From what characters I knew, the acting was pretty good here as well. I really wanna just steal that Edward and run away with her. I've seen plenty of good cosplays of Ed, but I've never seen one that moved and talked like her. And the Spike was pretty awesome too.
MASQ CONS: Again, plot. I've been told it was based on The Odyssey this year. I really didn't get that. I ended up having to leave before the end due to a serious migraine, but what I saw really made no sense.
OVERALL PROS: The lines everywhere seemed to go a lot faster/smoother than usual. Things didn't run quite as late. The new screens in main events looked good, and I liked that they actually had the cameras showing what was going on on stage for those who couldn't really see.
OVERALL CONS: It seemed like almost all the signings and VA panels were during main events. The main signing times on Saturday and Sunday were both during the Chess Match, and Friday's was during opening ceremonies I think. I think just overall there was a lot of bad matchups in timing things. I understand it's hard to time things out when you have that much going on, but it seems that at least the VA signings could have been scheduled at much better times. The only one I managed to catch was Crispin's Saturday morning signing, which was right when the dealer's room opened so that I had to stand in line to get into the dealer's room, then rush over and stand in another line to
Alright, I'm sure I'll think of more to say later, but for now, that's it. Overall very good job this year, everyone, I just wish I'd had more time for everything.

So wait. Maybe I am interpreting this wrong. But isn't the purpose of performing on stage to entertain? Not being able to hear would take away from the experience. It's not those holding the mics. It's more about the sound technician. Renting some wireless lavaliere mics for the chess match would fix the whole thing in one swoop. But I'm sure that would get incredibly expensive... From the perspective of being the onlooker, several people in the stands said "what, huh? I couldn't hear him" several times throughout the show. Maybe finding the proper speaker placement could also help to project the sound better.
The line for the rave was long. But moved REALLY fast. It rocked getting through that line so fast. :D

Hey guys I have been going to metrocon for 6 years now and I feel like this was by far the least friendly.
Number 1: A lot of dealers were upset because the prices were raised for booth rentals and they could only rent half the space some of them needed so it put them in sour moods. I wasn't a vendor but I know this because some of them were openly talking about it with their customers....aka me lol When they didn't have something out in the open they didn't want to go through the hundred boxes of "storage" they had underneath the table because it was originally suppose to be set up but there wasn't enough space.
Number 2: The staff were just plan scary this year. Normally if I got lost or couldn't find something, if I asked, most staff were interested in at least pointing me in the right direction. They felt totally unapproachable this year! Guns??? Really?? They were dressed like swat and were down right mean sometimes. I had my ticket and was going into one of the main rooms when they started yelling at me about not showing them the back of my ticket. I have never been asked that before so I just felt like I did something wrong when they pulled me aside just to look at the back of my ticket. I really did not like their "costumes" and the attitudes that came along with them. Simple stuff like bopping around a plasctic beach ball became hell for con goers I saw....guys this happens every year so why act like you didn't expect it? They also stopped people from doing the caramell dansen...wth? We love watching/participating when people are dancing around having a good time!
Number 3: How come on Saturday only half the con goers dressed up???? I was so dissapointed to see most people walking around in street clothes or with a nyan cat hat on. Just because you wear anime/manga stuff doesn't mean you are cosplaying >.< I know metro staff can't do a blip about it but it was kinda disapointing.
However I enjoyed the panels very very much and I heard the zombie wars thing was more organized this year. It was cleaner than years previous and the guide book this year was awesome and very organized. If there are a surplus of people though don't you think tickets should have gone down a little in price not up? Just a thought...
I know it is a lot of negative but overall I enjoyed most of the con I swear :D

No we are referring to the Brute Squad [security- guys in red shirts] going on stage for closing. One of the guys had his mic to his chest while talking. But the brute squad has more important things to do rather than going onstage. Like assuring your safety.

As far as I know these guys are not "staff" but rather volunteers. As the ones I saw had regular badges. If they were staff they would not be in costume but rather in a red or blue staff shirt. They probably could only point you in a direction because they don't know much. PLEASE find someone in the appropriate position to ask a question. Not the volunteers. And if they do give you a hard time report them to one of the guys in red shirts and a headset in their ear.

While it's not right for them to yell at you. We had problems with people making fake badges of only the front. So that's why you were asked to show if your badge was front/back because the fake ones that were going around this year were only front. Sorry if it scared you but that's what was happening.

Probably because it was taking place in an area that disturbs the flow of people. And why do you love the caramell dansen? that got old in 2007............ face palm........ Anyhow if the dance was taking place down stairs it blocks the flow of traffic. People need to understand that if you want to dance.. Dance where there are less people. I'm staff and I get agitated when I'm trying to get to point A and point B in a reasonably safe amount of time and I have to fight through an annoying dancing crowd in the middle of the hall. Plan the locations better if you don't want to get shut down. Now I'm not the guys who shut you down and who knows they could've shut you down just cause. But that is the reason I would've shut you down.. If I saw a blockage in traffic flow.

Oh, I had meant to mention this earlier, but there is a problem I heard about from a few people there, that might need to be addressed at some point. Apparently, at least one of the fox tail vendors down in the dealer's room was lying to buyers that the tails were artifical, when in fact, they were real fox tails.
I figured this out when some people came up to my booth in the artist alley (where I was also selling real tails and other real furs) and they started saying how they were opposed to fur. Then I pointed out to them that they were wearing fox tails. They said "no, these are fake...at least thats what we were told in the dealer's room" so I had to show them that their own tails were real, and they were NOT happy to find that out.
Vendors should not lie about the products they are selling, because the anti-fur people who bought the real tails were really upset about it once they found out. I can't say I really support animal rights people, but I would not falsely advertise my product to make them buy items they ordinarily wouldn't. That isn't good business ethics by any means.
I'm not sure exactly which vendor was doing this, since I couldn't really get into the dealer's room, but its just something to know about for the future.
I on the other hand, was completely honest about all my fur products being real, and I STILL got a ton of sales. Sellers never have to lie.
Other than that issue, though, I personally had no other problems and will be back next year with more REAL fox tails! :)

The Umbrella Corps volunteers we had at most of the doors doing the badge checks this year were exactly that, volunteers. Actually overall they made most of the Staff's work during the show this year run rather smoothly because as a group they made sure that their members showed up to the posts that they had signed up for.
The backs of tickets... this is a subject of contention that I started to notice last year, and as I cannot find a reason to countermand it, it shall probably stay in use for the foreseeable future, but not as official policy for door checks. Except for the Staff and Cast, all of the passes have printing on both the front and the back. Last year the notion that a person making copies of the badges would possibly only copy the one side started floating around. So someone started asking to see the backs of the passes, and it spread across all of the door checks. Personally I will almost never ask to see a badge's back side, but then again, This year was the first time in the last three that I actually took a full shift of checking badges. (Trust me, it's easy work.)
And to tell the truth, I have not come across a single faked badge.
Beach-balls and dancing, the only reasons I can think that those would have been stopped would have been due to obstruction and behavior getting out of hand.
And the Fox Tails, they may have been advertised as fake more as "these are not actually Fox" than "these are not actually dead animal." I know at one medieval fair years ago I head them hawked as "real imitation fake faux fox furs" or something along those lines.

Well, they WERE actually fox's tails, which means it would have still been a lie if they were advertised as not being fox. They were real tails from real foxes (I'm a fur dealer so I know what kind of fur I'm looking at when I see it), so however they were being advertised it was being done falsely becuase those people totally thought they were wearing fake fur. I just didn't think it was right at all for the vendor be taking advantage of unsuspecting buyers like that.
Personally, all my buyers seemed happy with my product even knowing it was real. Someone even bought a farm-raised fox pelt off me, even after I told them it was farm raised, and they thought it was really cool anyway. Your customers will be far happier with you and your product if they know you are honest. I'm sure I'll have a few repeat customers next year, too :)

To the person who said not enough people in costume. That number ALWAYS changes year to year, day to day. I normally dress up as Summomo from Chobits, but couldn't this year due to a back injury. <sad ears> I'm sorry :( So here's hoping for next year! My husband and I are planning on dressing as Jade and Tear from Tales of Symphonia :)
As for stopping the caramel dancing thing, I can really only see it if it was blocking a lot of traffic or con/emergency personnel needed to get though asap. I wouldn't say "it got old in '07" though. Carmel dancing has become for cons what conga lines have for main dances. Yes, it's silly, but it's fun! That's why so many people still do it. I know if I see a group that's doing it I'll join in until I see we need to stop/move. Let's face it, most of us fit into the "white and nerdy" (Thank you Weird Al) category and have no dancing skills what so ever. I include myself in said group. So carmel dancing is a way to silly dance that everyone likes.
I also think that with the security people, if it seemed like they were snapping at people, (I had no issues with any personally) it may have been simply A.)they're trying to be heard and B.) they're a bit overwhelmed. Think about it, it's however many security people are there, I really have no clue how many, trying to keep 7k+ people safe from getting trampled. No mean feat IMO.

Well they were referring to volunteers being snappy. Our own security team is more than capable of handling more than 7k people while keeping their composure. The security team only raises their voice if you're doing something very wrong or before the rave starts because it's the only way to get peoples attention so we can get everyone in ASAP. I calmly handle everyone who comes into the main ballroom. Sure a few of you guys cussed me out here and there for doing my job but no biggie. No need to raise my tone of voice. I really only yell if you're a few feet away and I need to tell you something ^___^; Be like "sorry! Can't sit hereeee! Move backwards please!!!"

The volunteers where pretty nice. There was one guy who annoyed me though. Always staring and warning me about filming. I guess he does not like those who walk around with cameras. Not only did I pay $60 to get in. But I'm also advertising for free. Not that anyone asked in the first place.
From my experience it was awesome with volunteers and staff. There was just...THAT GUY.

There was no bar against photography or film at Metrocon except during specific events at the guests discretion, at which it was always announced. Professional use of likeness / copyright laws do apply to all material gathered though. And now you have the official word to arm yourself next year, and security will back you up. If it's a red shirt who says it to you, I'll back you up, though anyone in a red shirt should know better.

I agree the caramell dansen is the one thing that most con goers know how to do and enjoy it. To say it was done in 07 like some fashion piece is harsh considering a lot of people look forward to taking part in it. Yes if they are in the way it is understandable but when you think about it where ever a dance is started it is going to hold up traffic momentarily because people take pictures/record/watch those who are dancing. it isn't the physical group that is causing the problem.
I was referring to the costumes that the volunteers were adorned in. The metro staff cannot choose or tell them what not to wear before hand? Did you all not know what they would show up in? I asked why they were wearing them and they said they had to. I am just pointing out that it made them feel very hostile and when an ordinary instance of dancing or traditional no no's are happening it makes the atmosphere much more harsh and intense. Guns and bullet proof looking vests do not make a slap on the wrist feel as such.
If a volunteer doesn't feel like helping a con goer when a question is asked they can just say so but I have never had a problem with it until this year.
I also have to agree that some of them went overboard with the yelling. There is no reason for the volunteers to feel that they need to yell at people for not showing the back of their badge...which I understand why it needs to be shown but not why they felt it necessary to scream at me about it, I was ready to comply immediately.

Initially I was going to cross post my cosplay.com response, but if you are interested in what I have to say go check it out.
Also while I personally have not heard any negative feedback outside of some suggestions including a big name who attended I would like to remind everyone that the cosplay photographer panel (Intro To Cosplay Photography as it is listed) was a beginners overview to emphasize on basics for those who are starting out. This included use of location, editing basics, etiquette and lighting. As far as any settings go me and BellaVoce did not spend much time on this as we wanted the panel to be accessible to anyone whether they were using a professional grade camera or limited to a basic $60 digital camera.
Although I would like any suggestions that would help emphasize this goal for future runs.

The Tampa Bay Umbrella Corporation is actually its own monotonous autonomous group with it's own hierarchy, not affiliated with Metrocon. The fact that they all volunteered and wore their particular brand of costume is not a cause for concern. Trust me when I say that all of your concerns with this instance have been noted and are on the list of talking points for the security and volunteer portions of our staff post-con meeting.

Pretty sure Ben meant "autonomous" rather than "monotonous". Though they can be from time to time .... They did do a great job though and helped me out a lot.

thebrutesquag, alright. That's quite awesome, actually. I do have a few questions. For the chess match, I wanted to go up front to film, but I didn't have a special seating pass. Am I allowed to go up there strictly for filming purposes? I am very mindful of those around me, so I'm not going to bock peoples view. I'd take away from the experience and the added money for those close seats if I'm walling people off.
I am considering doing a mini documentary on metrocon (assuming you guys are cool with it), but I was split between filming my friends and the con itself. Next year, would any of the volunteers and staff maybe be able to set aside a few minutes each, assuming I decide to do it?
If so, is there any way to identify me so that I can do that extra filming stuff? If you guys are cool with it.
