So I originally had up a post on the Misc. News of the Day topic about this, but after watching the actual video on YouTube, I decided to make a completely different topic about it. The video really makes you think since it's meant to be so realistic, and the girls invovled are around most of the ages of the people on AM. A police department in Wales created this video to show what could happen if you text while driving. It is very controversial because of how violent it is, and we can discuss that too after some people have watched it.
Statistics say it increases your chances of getting into an accident by 23%! It's right there with drinking and driving now-a-days! I have the PSA that the Wales police department created, but it is very graphic and I don't know if I am allowed to post the link to it on AM, but I will get a hold of a mod and ask. I also have a news story about it that shows clips from it, http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/32549978#32549978 and they talk about the dangers.
What do you all think? Do you think it's hype? Have you texted while driving before? I have, I'll admit that. But after seeing that video, never again. Let's discuss!

Anything that takes your attention away from the road, which includes texting, talking on the phone or even changing radio stations, puts you and others in the way of harm. When you are driving - just drive, don't carry on a conversation!

Phoning, texting or anything like that is actually illegal here in the good ol' UK. You will be fined and possibly placed under arrest for it, so yeah, we don't really have a choice.
However, bluetooth/hands free kits are fine. You can talk provided both eyes are on the road and both hands on the wheel so to speak.

Having a full car of people raises your chances of getting into an accident.
I say keep the texting if you HAVE to do it to the stop lights and parking lots.

I actually know a woman who is now paralyzed from the neck down because she was hit by someone flying over a blind hill while messing with her phone. She will never walk again, never again able to hold her children or her husband all because a 19 year old was more concerned with her personal life. On the other side, the girl's parents ended up holding the bag as far as the cost of the accident. I don't know if the girl even realizes the extent of the harm she caused.

Pretty much doing anything that will take your eyes and concentration off the road is never a good idea.
Talking on the phone, texting, and drinking fall under that category.
I've had close calls texting while driving, I use to do it all the time, after the last close call in which I nearly caused an accident, if I'm gonna text, and I'm in my car, I'm sorry but I will not answer unless I'm at a red light and that's if I absolutely HAVE TO ANSWER.
It's incredibly distracting and I laughed at the fact that most people thought they were going to far as to the graphic nature of this video, those are the people to which I would like to say: aren't REAL accidents graphic? Don't people die in them every day? So because your kid is a bit squeamish we can't show them what would happen to them? What about when he's in a real accident and has to see his arm dangling by a shred of skin, what then? I would love to see then who they're gonna tell that they "went too far."

As a culture, we are so jaded by "graphic" violence and we enjoy the glorfication of it that it may have no effect at all. Yes, there may be some individuals who make the decision not to text while driving, but that will most likely be the result of a close call rather than a PSA. On a large scale, this PSA will not change anything. Nothing will change until individual states (countries, if app.) make it illegal and enforce the law and maybe not even then.

It doesn't change then. There are really not enough cops to be on everybody who's texting/calling someone while driving. Just like making it illegal to drive while intoxicated doesn't stop people. There are just those people out there who think they can get away with anything. Then accidents happen. Even then, people still do it.
I think this graphic nature of this video is good, and believe it will get through to some people. Just like, in Colorado and maybe other states, when you are the cause of an accident, whether intoxicated or not, part of your "punishment" is to watch a video called Alive at 25, which is supposed to have the same effect of people who drink and drive, as the PSA should have on people who text and drive. Some people will get the message, and some are too thick headed to let it sink in. If people are upset that this video is too graphic, and will scar their kids, then they need a reality check. Initially, I think that's the point of the video, to scare their kids so that this won't happen to them.

The video may be "graphic" but it's very plausible and believable. It's probably about the same as (if not milder than) some of the popular "R" movies lot's of kids are watching. People shouldn't complain about a 5-minute clip when their kids go to the movies and watch worse junk for 2 hours. Especially if something like this has the potential to keep them from causing an accident like that.

There are two ways to get a person's attention. Either with shock value (like this PSA) or with humiliation (like the news story of the teen falling into a manhole while texting because she was not paying attention).
Now...if they can combine them...maybe it will help everyone more.

to be completely honest I dont think it's that graphic, at least not as graphic as that bright red warning is making it out to be. It is to some extent of course, but I dont think squeamish people should be told not to watch, everyone should watch.
And I agree with you, this clip is like nothing compared to films that teens have flocked to forever like the Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street movie franchises, along with other horror films.
But to stay on topic, texting while driving is the dumbest thing I have ever witnessed and while I know no one that has been affected by a crash involving texting, I still think it should be regulated as best it can be. At the very least, people, cant you at least wait until you're at a red light to look at your text? Common sense should SCREAM "dont stick a phone in front of your face while you're operating a 2,000 pound motor vehicle".

I had to post a warning or I couldn't post the video.
While I do agree that this video is now where near as bad as some movies these days are, there are still those people who don't watch things like that for that very reason. The PSA video is more intense then gory, and in my opinion (and probably is very obvious), is what makes it so graphic and very, very neccessary. The part with the dead baby really got to me. I'd think that the parents who get upset over this PSA are the ones that try to prevent their kids from watching those movies, but you never know.
And this topic is also to discuss the video and why people are so upset over it, especially with movies such as you described out today. I have not seen it on any news channels yet, but if anyone has, do they warn you before they show it? If so, it's probably to save their own butts from parents saying, "I had to put my child through therapy because of this! SUE! SUE!" Because everyone is so lawsuit happy these days. Just like movies have ratings. It's meant to be graphic and intense to get to these kids, and I do agree that a warning is kind of pointless for something so serious, but there are some strange people out there...

I don't know where they are with the progress on this, but last I heard, here in Texas, they were attempting to write up a bill or law that made texting while driving as bad as a DUI. I text while I drive sometimes, but I don't look at my phone when I do it (resulting in a lot of typos and short, 3 word texts). It's still dangerous though, and a risk that really isn't worth taking.

Even if can text without actually looking at your phone, you still have to take your eyes away from the road to read the incoming text. A split second distraction can cause an accident and that is usually all it takes.

I feel that you shouldn't text while driving because if you are texting then you are liable to cause an accident and plus you can always wait until you get out of your car to check your Text. To me texting and driving is the same as talking on your cell phone and driving. Both activites limit you reaction time and both you and the other can get hurt or worse be killed. So I say just Don't Do it PERIOD!!!!!!

Not only that, you have to put your focus into writing the text, regardless if you are looking at it. That is focus you are taking away from driving.

I have to agree that using your mobile phone while driving, either for calling someone or to text them is a bad idea and it can and will lead to accidents.
But something I have seen a lot of women do when driving, it’s usually in the morning, and its not just young women drivers that do it, a lot of the older ones are guilty of this too, and it is putting makeup on. How can you possibly do this while driving without being a danger to yourself and others? So I think putting makeup on while driving at any time should be illegal, also smoking should be illegal while you are driving.

Just cutting in here before a Smoker's rights campaign kicks off XD. You should know that Tycoon here is both a driver and a smoker, so it's not as if he's telling people off for smoking.
But I can see his point and as many people have stated, anything that takes your concentration away from the wheel is going to make you a danger on the road, even if it's just for that 0.001 second.

I think that's the one point being addressed here, anything that will take your eyes and concentration from the road and from driving, will potentially put alot of people in harms way.

So, basically, ANYTHING, that takes away from concetration to driving, since, metal on metal especially at a REALLY fast pace, will do great harm, and no one can know the extent of the harm until it happens.
Texting and driving, even at a stop light to do it is a bad idea, because you do not know what the next person behind you, or infront of you will be doing. When you get your drivers license, no matter where you live, let it be, America, the UK, Asia, I am CERTAIN they emphasize, "eyes" on the road at all times, always check your mirrors, and so forth.
In conclusion, texting and driving, stupid idea.
Anything that will cause you harm, or some one else, as I have read and seen in that video, BAD IDEA.
Bottom line is, people will think its okay, because they have control over what will happen, or so they think, until it actually happens.
