Well, yet another topic for discussion. Let's see what this email i received brings up to the people of Metro...

In Florida , an atheist created a case against the upcoming Easter & Passover
holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians,
Jews & observances of their holy days.

The argument was it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized day(s).

The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation
by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, 'Case dismissed.'

The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, 'your honor, how can you

possibly dismiss this case?

The Christians have Christmas, Easter & others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur

& Hanukkah. Yet my client & all other atheists have no such holidays.'

The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, 'But you do.

Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant.'

The lawyer said, 'Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday
for atheists.'

The judge said, 'The calendar says April 1st is 'April Fools Day.' Psalm 14:1 states 'The fool
says in his heart, there is no God.'

Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool.

Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned.

I'd like to see that same hearing go before an ATHEIST judge, since that one was very clearly a closed-minded Christian... and therefor ignorant of the injustice done to atheists by denying them days off (though "holy day" is not an adequate term used to describe it), and April Fool's is not a day off, it's just a day with a name.

How can it be a HOLY day for an ATHEIST?

That just seems so......contradictive to me...

I doubt this actually happened. Aside from it likely being part of a chain e-mail, no judge would be so brazen or ignorant.

On the matter of an atheist holiday though, it's no injustice that they get no "days off". They chose not to ascribe to a religion and thus have no holy days to observe.

If i'm correct Krash, judges can't be Atheist as they're sweared into the justice system by the bible unless they're not true to being a christian or became one after their swearing. I may be wrong about that though as i've got a splitting headache right now and can't think clearly on it. Now that i think about it, i guess that means one can't become President either unless they turn afterwards because they're sweared into presidency...

correct me if i'm wrong though.

No matter what race or religion. As long as you were born in the United States you have the right as an American to become president.

If an Atheist ran for president; he still has a chance to win but I highly doubt he will get any votes because he is a Atheist; it is the same with a Judge. You can swear to uphold justice under the name of God but people can easily say one thing and do another. I don't think it would be uncoming for an Atheist to become a Judge. As long as he had a strong handle on the law and was a very logical thinker.

Though; if a jewish person became president; would they be sworn in with a Torah instead of a bible? That I would like to see; at least than it would show America respects all religions and isn't pushing one religion on us all.

If I ever become president I'll let'cha know XD.

That what a very Christian joke and it has obviously struck up debate about religion. A dangerous topic. But anyone can become a president if they were born in the United States regardless of religion. It's the separation of church and state. (Even if sometimes it's not very separate x.X) I'm sure if an Atheist were sworn into Presidency they would take out anything having to deal with God if he/she felt that strongly about it. But I dunno. Hmmmm, it is a good question.

There was actually a debate a number of years ago about getting rid of the bible as well as the whole "so help you God" for court participants. And if I recall correctly, a number of courthouses simply say "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth"/end.

I also found the topic tactless. It's one thing to value your belief's but another entirely to bash other's beliefs (or lack thereof) to benefit your own. It is offensive, but if you guys rather debate on it I'll leave it be.

If need be a mod or admin can move this to the debate forum and i did forget some of the courthouses do simply allow them to just raise their hand... Miss Amber got it right.

Oh and btw just in case some ppl missed it Holy Day is supposed to mean Holiday... ^_^

I didn't get it at first.

okay, like, seriously, you're an atheist with no ties to a supposed omniscient/omnipotent being or religion.

OF COURSE you won't have any holidays. You have to bring it to court because you're upset about the fact that your lack of faith means you don't get days off for religious observance? Uh, what? No religious days off because you're not religious!

The april fools day thing is a offensive, though. I won't deny that at all, but the court case as whole is rediculous, so I doubt it's even true.

What about Labor day or even Memorial Day? Not religious holidays but still people get them off. Days that should be remembered in history yes but a holiday doesn't have to be of a religion to be a holiday.

Psh.

I will settle this!

For an Atheist, every day is Atheist day. Just like for us Agnostics, every day is Agnostic Day!

Sorry, I felt like we Agnos were being left out. We don't really have a day, either, so the Atheists shouldn't feel too bad :{

Whoever wrote the article deliberately used "holy day" instead of "holiday" to detract attention from holidays that are non-religious in nature - things like Memorial Day, Veterans's Day (which have been mentioned already) and New Year's Day. It's a clever tactic to leave the jury ill-informed and gives them a bias toward a religiously-geared verdict.

The issue here isn't to bash on Christianity, or any other religious (or non-religious) group, but to point out that the government is catering to one religion in particularly while leaving a whole slew of other groups without any sort of attention. It also calls into question (as mentioned in passing earlier) the failure of today's establishments to hold true to the "division of church and state" practice.

"Liberty and Justice for All" includes non-Christians, and it's not just for them to be denied holidays just because they aren't Christian.

Definitions of "holiday" from wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
• vacation
• leisure time away from work devoted to rest or pleasure.
• a day on which work is suspended by law or custom

I really don't think that April Fools' Day should be a holiday. I don't think that playing pranks is a cool thing to do, lol, but that is my opinion. And to call it a holy day is ludicrous.

If you think April Fool's day is silly, it gets better... Here is a list of holidays for January.

http://www.brownielocks.com/january.htm

And to add to the debate at hand technically Atheists do have a holiday. Two actually:

January 16th is Nothing Day and also Religious Freedom Day (Which is the same day as Appreciate a Dragon Day.)

January 18th is also World Religion Day. (Which is also Pooh Day and Do Dah Parade Day.)
