Interested in auditioning for the Chess Match or the Masquerade?

Well, this is a thread for pointers and tips from those from past shows, or those who have done shows like this before.

ALL OFF-TOPIC POSTS WILL BE DELETED!

Here are some tips to start!

~Drink lots of water. Start the night before. Just drinking water that morning won't cut it! If you start getting too hot at the tryouts, and water is not cutting it, sip some Gatorade. NO SODA!! Caffeine will only dehydrate you further. If you get really hot, do NOT drink ice-cold water. It can send your vocal cords into shock, and that is no good for the vocal portion! Room temperature is the best.

~Eat breakfast. Start the day off right. Drink a glass of water to get your metabolism started, then eat a balanced breakfast of a carbohydrate with protein, like yogurt with granola, or eggs with toast. This will help your energy stay constant. Nothing too heavy, it will likely make you sick. Eat too little, and you may faint. Be careful.

~Wear Sunblock. At LEAST SPF30. Apply it 15 minutes before sun exposure for maximum absorption into the skin. If your eyes are sensitive to sunlight, wear a well-fitted hat/cap. Sunglasses are a no-no at tryouts and practice, but hats are okay, as long as they do not fall off and cause a trip hazard.

~Remove all jewelry. Just do it. Accidents happen. I won't share the horror stories.

~Be aware of what you wear. Comfort is key to optimum movement. Under-Armor is good, since it keeps you cool, as well. No jeans. Clothes that fit snugly, but not too tight, with a stretch will give you the best results. For the ladies! Wear a Sports Bra. You can get 3 for $9 at Wal-Mart that are CRAZY comfortable! Trust me, they will make you more comfortable. Underwire + Work out = Not Fun. Besides, they are normally made from cotton and breathe better than normal bras.

~Sneakers. Sneakers. Sneakers. Wear sneakers. No flip-flops. No ballet slippers. Dance SNEAKERS are okay. Make sure they fit well and won't fall off. Tripping during the lap is NOT a good plan.

~Breathe. Just relax and enjoy yourself. The tryouts are fun, as are rehearsals, but they are hard work.

And remember, strive to do your best, don't aim to be the best. There is a big difference. Show us who YOU are. That is the person we care about.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Any past cast, feel free to give relevant input.

New? Ask questions.

Disclaimer - We will NOT answer ANYTHING about "how you get in" or plot-related questions. This thread is about how to take care of yourself at tryouts and rehearsals. This is not about "the key to making it in." This is about taking care of yourself for the tryouts.

NO POSTS ABOUT HOW TO BETTER YOUR SCORE. ONLY POSTS ABOUT HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.

And, thus concludes "LM's Guide to Not Dying at Tryouts."

(I only do not sticky this in the FM forum to keep all the tips together.)

I agree with the dance sneakers. They are VERY comfortable and easy to move in.

But my little tip: Socialize. Don't alienate yourself from everyone else. Sure, you're all auditioning for the same thing (for the most part), but not socializing will make you so nervous. Talk to people. Trust me, you'll start to relax. If they were cast before, they could give you pointers. You may meet some good friends!

My tip is to SMILE! I've never done Metrocon Chess or Masquerade but I've done a bunch of proffessional and otherwise auditions and if I've learned anything--it's to smile. Smile at people, smile at the directors, smile all over.

It makes you feel better, it makes you easier to talk too, and smiling is just plain fun.

:D

One tip I learned from Speech & Debate back in high school, that I've carried with me to every type of performance I've done, is quite simply, "If you feel totally stupid, you're doing it right."

Which more precisely means, 'leave your inhibitions behind you'. Remember when you were five years old and you would unabashedly run up to every new person you met, greet them enthusiastically, and then show them how awesome a Power Ranger you were? This is the same thing. =P You'll give your best performance if you don't worry about looking silly in front of a bunch of people you don't know. Remember, they're all here to do the exact same thing.

Also, when the tryout page goes online, definitely listen to everything it says. It pays off in ways you wouldn't expect.

Definitely wanna reiterate the water thing, even if you drank a gallon yesterday, bring water with you, even if it's just a dasani bottle, you'll want it be the time you're through.

Being yourself helps a lot too, no one is going to make fun of you, we're all crazy to be there in the first place so you have nothing to prove ^^

HAVE FUN, MAKE FRIENDS, and realize that everyone is just as nervous as you are. Don't think of it too much like a competition (though do take it seriously) think of it more as trying to be the best YOU can be, if anything, compete with yourself.

It'll help you zero in on YOUR skills, not somebody elses. Sure they might be a kung-fu master, but that doesn't mean that they are fit for the part you want, don't fret.

Again, have fun, drink water, be social, and just be glad to be there, it's great ^^

Thank you lolita minako, for the list. I'm going to be one of the newbies there so it's really helpful. I was worried about some of that stuff, but since you explained it I feel better. I'm really looking forward to when the dates are given and when the auditions begin, even if I don't make it, I'd love to make some new friends. ^_^

umm...how in shape do you have to be...

well.

you dont have to be a navy seal or anything. haha

but you should be in pretty good shape.
and if ur not... u WILL be by the end of it. LoL

our warmups include some intense stretching and yoga
and we DO run...

especially if ur late....

*cries*

the fights themselves are very physically demanding as well

but dont think that you need to be army trained in order to handle it

use good judgement

True true.

1. Drink water. I am very bad at this... Seeing as how water isn't as much of a friend to me as Coke is. But I have learned that it is good to carry around and take as many sips as possible. Also, during tryouts have the bottle close to you and when you are doing the work out part. And don't be afraid to carry it around. Take sips. EVERY SIP IS REFRESHING AND CAN MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER. Especially in FL heat.

2. Talk to new people! Get to know them or just chat. Like NK said, it relaxes you! Get there early and get those jitters out. It's not bad to be nervous one bit. It's a good rush.

To xxxDreamerSora - Well when you go to tryouts, depending on what is going to be done, it will most likely consist of somewhere along the lines of some pushups, crunches, stretches, more stuff to push you, and running a lap. Not sure what the diectors have planned, but there is always a workout and is pretty intense. (If anyone else can help follow up this better than I can explain, please do! ^^;)

There's no such requirement for tryouts. Doesn't matter if this will be your first Metro or your sixth.

As part of trying to ascertain how physically fit you need to be: consider practice to be an eight hour workday in which you spend one hour on an intense and varied workout schedule, six hours beating up the guy you happen to be fighting, and one hour eating lunch. Your office is in the middle of an arid dessert and the sun has no mercy. You need to be able to do all of this without injuring yourself (or someone else), giving yourself a heart attack, or regularly passing out due to heatstroke and you need to be able to do it on two consecutive days. Stamina is definitely something you need to have.

That being said, I would consider myself an "average joe" in terms of physical prowess. I'm not muscular and I don't exercise regularly (though I would at least call myself 'fit'), but I was able to handle the training schedule with no problem. Granted, a stagehand position is not nearly as intensive as a fighting role, but hopefully this gives you an idea of what kind of shape you need to be in. If you're not sure you can handle the above regimen, work on improving your stamina.

Also note that the "work day" analogy applies to Chess. Everyone does the workout and everyone eats lunch, but I'm not sure how Masquerade runs the rest of their day.

Here's my tip to the newbies:

Start early.

The sooner you prepare, the sooner you start working out and drinking water, getting in shape, working on your projection, the better. Just because this is the off season is no reason to get lazy! Get in shape while you have plenty of time to do it, since there are many months till you audition ^_^

Exactly. Start early, and practice. Off season is not your excuse to say 'I'm not in the mood to do this.' ::shakes finger:: Just be sure to know what you're capable of.

Let's see... Well... I'm not going to be able to say anything new, am I? ::sigh:: Everyone else has already said what I wanted to say. ;o;

I thought of another thing to remember that is VERY important:

SLEEP.

I can't stress this enough. Get at least 6-8 hours a night beforehand.

Also, a good thing to do is to rotate Gatorade and water. I don't recommend Power Aid because I was told by someone who fills vending machines that when it goes bad it becomes radioactive and they need a special team in hazmat suits to come in to dispose of it... Needless to say, I don't want something that does that in my body, thank you. **Yes, I asked if Gatorade is the same, he said no-that's safe XD**

If you cannot play a few rounds of DDR without getting really winded, there may be problems. I am not in great shape at all, and I have been handling myself okay. A friend of mine has asthma and had to drop out of the tryouts after the warm-ups. If you finish and go, "Whoa...this may not be a good thing," don't be afraid to tell us. We prefer you to be honest than hurt yourself.

You do not have to have gone to METROCON before, but a feel of the convention atmosphere helps you mentally (like the hectic atmosphere when you have an agenda at the con), but won't hurt you if you are a total "newb." XD

Yeah, totally covered that in the OP. Start early. And you have to drink more than the allotted 8 glasses a day to handle it.

BTW, the comment about the "certain someone" was uncalled for. That was a fluke thing, as she has been participating in sports for years. Sometimes your body sucks up too much moisture. I drink water constantly since part of my job is outside (and with my migraines and all, the meds make me thirsty almost all the time), and I got dehydrated fairly often at practice, and left with the feeling of a hangover (with is dehydration). I would then drink some Gatorade and water when I got home, took a warm bath, and I was fine within 2 hours. Like I said in my OP, sometimes water just isn't enough in that sort of hear.

-------------------------------------------------------------

And, to reiterate my OP, do NOT post anything in here that would up your scores. That would include tips to fighting invisible ninjas effectively, vocal tips, etc.

This is a "we don't want to call a medic for you" tip thread. So far, most posts have been fine, but I am already deleting some. If your was deleted, sorry, I posted guidelines.

I remember getting dehydrated a bit at practice, but like LM said, a bath and some Gatorade later I felt better.

Don't drink too much Gatorade, it will make you sick. Too much water can upset your stomach a little, too, but this is all if it's all at once. That's why you alternate between the two, and like Omee said, sip at it.

And LM mentioned breakfast. I know I have a hard time eating protein with breakie because I don't like breakfast meats (my breakie is a plate of carbs, really...) and I can't eat protein bars (I can't eat soy). So during the day to keep me going, I snack on fruits and veggies (we ALWAYS bring a cooler), as well as fruit snacks (natural ones), cereal bars, etc. It helps!

Being so pale myself...invest in a good water bottle to refill constantly and keep your drink cool. Plus, sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen, the more spf the better, as well as it being a trustworthy brand, non-greesy, coconut smell, whatever you want that'll make you wear it more often. If you're trying to tan, apply anyway, just use a lower spf. Mix in light colours or even "sun proof" clothing to prevent further burning. No one needs six hours of sun exposure, especially for gingers. ;_;

Watch what you eat during lunch. Find something nutrious and filling, but easy on the stomach...so that double stack hamburger, probably not the best thing to have. Some soda is okay if you make sure you flush your system out, especially if you have a vocal heavy part. Also, make sure to eat someting protein packed during or after to ease the muscle soreness.

If you are one to become winded constantly, focus on doing endurance exercises to push yourselve further. We don't want anyone to pass out by any means, especially during the first few weeks.

Bring only what you really need because 1) you're sharing space with 40+ people 2) mosi people walk through 3) less stuff for us pick up afterwards if you leave it. >_<

Kindness goes a long way. Offer your help before it's even asked for.

Step outside your comfort zone...or they'll drag you out of it at sword point, seriously. XD

Be sure to WASH said bottle often. It grows bacteria. =>.<=

Reapply sunscreen during the day. It will sweat off, even the sports stuff.

And one more thing (that will help you survive the wrath of your teammates): please, for all that's holy, wear deodorant!!!

-Gallon jugs of water are your BEST FRIEND. They cost like 69c at Publix, and are durable enough to be refilled and suchlike. Plus, they don't fall over and get dirty quite as easily as water bottles do.

-Don't feel pressured to be as bendy or as fit as other people. Everyone's body is different and has different levels of comfortability. Push yourself enough to feel it, but not enough to be too painful. DON'T HURT YOURSELF. That's bad.

-Have fun! It's a show. Shows rock. Feel the connection with the cast, and you'll be good.

Bahahahah -is bendy :)-
But yeah going back to something said a LONG time ago lol:
I hadn't even GONE to Metrocon last year when i tried out. Lulsy experience. I dont wanna talk about it. xD
Then i actually WENT to metro and SAW the chess match and i thought 'you know i'm kinda glad i didn't get in THIS year...BUT I'M TOTALLY GETTING IN NEXT YEAR FUR SURE!!'
I think you really need to just stay positive and don't let anything really intimidate you. They aren't going to kill you if you make a mistake. (of course this rule TOTALLY doesn't apply to me X3) Like nick. He's REALLY tough and can be REALLY scary most of the time. But its all just a test ^_~ if I can pass then YOU can pass lol. For sure.

USE YOUR HEAD! (in some cases literally) If it doesnt seem smart then it probably isnt. Like dont pick up a random weapon and start flipping it around EVEN if you THINK you know what your doing.
FOCUS!
TUCK YOUR HEAD! TUCK YOUR HEAD! FOCUS! TUCK YOUR HEAD! TUCK YOUR FOCUS! XP I miss that. OH that reminds me. Listen to Nick and Terry and Don and Alex. They KNOW what theyre doing. Promise lol.

I will repeat, Hellfish, nothing to up scores (your suggestions would be included). Only tips to help newcomers from getting hurt during tryouts.

Again, all posts with tips that can affect scores will be deleted without question, no matter who posted it. We want everyone to have a fair chance, and it won't be fair if members of this forum have a lead on everyone else. This post is more for health and safety, rather than a boost-your-score thread.

If it continues, the thread will be locked and all additions will have to be submitted through PM.

------------------------------------------------------------

To make a suggestion, if you have a scratchy throat leading up to practice, drink some hot tea with honey to soothe the pain. You would hate to blow your voice in the hype of the tryouts so that you can't function at school or work, where speech is rather necessary.
