Dragonball movie: The Way to Become the Strongest
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1998 Anime Guide)
As an avid NON-fan of the various Dragonball series, I was quite surprised to find this rather entertaining (maybe it’s the lack of 20 episode long drawn out fights—or the lack of the training room where a day’s training takes a year to watch). Released theatrically for the 10th anniversary of Dragonball anime, Jason tells me this film is a compression of the first several TV episodes. Goku’s grandfather taught him to be nice to girls, so he’s easily manipulated by Bulma into joining her on a quest for the rest of the 7 Dragonballs so she can make a superficial wish come true. Along the way they run across shape-changing pig Oolong, girl-afraid Yamcha, Master Roshi (not to be confused with Damaramu’s Mecha Roshi) and the Red Ribbon Army whose vertically-challenged leader has other plans for the Dragonballs.
