Idol Angel Youkoso Yohko TV (Idol Angel Welcome Yoko)
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1998 Anime Guide)
This was the 2nd of Sony’s idol singer TV series (The 1st was ‘Legend of Idol Eriko’ which I was too broke to get the 2 LD boxes of upon its video release…argh! Luckily I was able to get all of Youkoso Yohko on LD :). The sugar-laden, upbeat 40 episode series had a small, but extremely dedicated cult following in Japan. Yohko Tanaka (voice by Mika Kanai--KO Seiki’s Mei Mar) leaves country life behind to go to Shibuya to fulfill her dream of becoming an idol singer. Traveling with her is her pet flying squirrel, Muu (doesn’t every adorable anime character need a cute sidekick?). Along the way they meet up with Saki (voice by Megumi), who has similar plans. They become friends and decide to work together to pursue their dreams of stardom. Yuko Mizutani (Mihoshi) provides the voice for her rival, the stuck-up, green-haired idol star Kyouko Hoshihana.
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1999 Anime Guide)
Need a serious fix of ‘kawaii’? This sucrose-heavy companion series to Sony’s ‘Idol Angel Eriko’ is very dear to me, partially because of how freakin’ long it took me to track down the laserdiscs after I ordered the artbook. Idol Angel Welcome Yohko is one of those shows cons like this were made for because you have little chance of seeing it anywhere else. I was hoping to contact Tomodachi (MB,Hime-chan,Lilika) and convince them to fansub this until I found out they disbanded. ARGH! Yohko is a young girl with dreams of singing stardom who moves to Shibuya to make it big. Accompanying her is a flying squirrel (because every shojo character needs an adorable little animal sidekick) and a friend she meets on the train (voiced by Megumi). Taping this for Zack was what spawned the term ‘shojo anime pimp daddy’. I told him to pick out 3 eps and I’m not sure which ones he did (possibilities include: the Chronos ep, moving into ice cream factory apt. ep, Bruce Springsteen ep, Romeo & Juliet ep). Don’t ask me, I just own the LDs, not like I’ve had time to watch them (maybe I will after N99).
