Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna (Earth Girl Arjuna)
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 2001 Anime Guide)
One summer day Juna died in a freak motorcycle accident while riding with her friend Tokio. The thing is, her family & friends don’t know she’s quite dead yet. That’s because she jumped up off the bed in the OR after flatlining and ran outside to be whisked away by a military helicopter. That’s because she was offered a 2nd chance at life by Chris, the Avatar of Time, if she take his place fighting the Raaja to purify them & open the door to the future to save Earth. It sounded like a good deal at first, but now she’s not so sure…of herself. The Raaja look kinda like the Graboids (from Tremors) meet the aliens from Final Fantasy: Spirits Within movie. Poor Tokio, falls in love with his best female friend only to learn they can’t really hang out anymore cuz she’s busy saving the planet. I like how her transformation isn’t seen by normal humans who start assuming she’s lost her mind. Has some very realistically animated scenes, including one where they must’ve rotoscoped CPJusty hitting a pothole. Interesting eco-savior show with nice combination of cel animation & CG effects. Remind me to buy the dvd so I can see it on a clearer picture.
(NOTE: I've since heard from a friend of mine, who has seen the entire series, that the pro-ecological tone of this anime degenerates to the point of being as cheesy as Captain Planet -- which is a shame since I was starting to really like this show.)
