Queen Emeraldas OAVs
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1999 Anime Guide)
As a creation of Leiji ‘Space Battleship Yamato’ Matsumoto, most anime fans know Emeraldas as Harlock’s babe or the sister of that Galaxy 999 chick. Actually it’s about time she got a 90’s facelift (luckily the anime surgeons let her keep the trademark scar) to show us what a cool character she really is. She’s a space pirate with a strict code of honor and a way cool gravity saber to boot. Hiroshi Umino (voiced by my personal seiyuu goddess, Megumi-sama, a.k.a. Ranma-chan) is a stowaway headed for Diabaran. LeLaw is another stowaway (voiced by Kenichi ‘Genma Saotome’ Ogata). Hiroshi dreams of building his own ship & traveling the stars like his idol Tochiro (who was Emeraldas’ techie). When the cowardly Afressian Commander Eldomain attacks the ship they’re on, it’s the Queen Emeraldas to the rescue. Watching this makes me want to hunt down all of Matsumoto’s work on LD. Nice CG rendering of the Queen Emeraldas in the opening too. Shown subtitled…so we don’t have to relive that whole ‘Hanna Cabana Smith’ thing.
