Yu Yu Hakusho TV 1-8
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1998 Anime Guide)
Yuusuke Urameshi & Kuwabara are typical high school rival thug bosses in the vein of ‘Sho Baku’, ‘Kyou Kara Ore Wa’ & ‘Slam Dunk’. Suddenly their lives take a strange turn when Yuusuke gets hit by a car saving a kid (figures the first good deed of his life gets him killed). He is brought back by the Koenma (son of the king of hell) to work for the Makai maintaining the status quo by fighting renegade demons. Before long Kuwabara joins his fight & they team up with 2 Reikai (beings of the spirit world): Kurama, a kitsune (fox spirit) who can command plant life and Hiei a pint-sized swordsman with a dragon tattoo on his arm which becomes the flames of darkness (Jaoensetsukokuryuha!). This great 112 episode series will probably win over a lot of DBZ fans (as fight shows go, it’s SO much better…I never understood the fanatical following of Dragonball zzzzzzzzz with it’s 20 episode long fights). Combine equal parts Ghostbusters & DBZ and you get Yu2H (better than the sum of its parts).
(NOTE: It's great to finally see the series in the U.S. after all these years. This brief review is ancient and was written when we were trying to save space for fitting many things into a con guide. I will be working on a large Yu Yu Hakushou section for Metro later this year...when I finish all my other writing for this site.)
