The Samurai
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1998 Anime Guide)
This great, albeit little-known one-shot OAV (allegedly from manga artist Rumiko "Ranma" Takahashi) goes to show that american subtitling companies are being lazy (AnimEigo says they’re doing live action samurai films now because there aren’t any good anime left…bah!). 16 year old Takashi Shimatsuri is a student at Arashihams H.S. and (like his father, Raizo) a skilled samurai. Two new students, Akari and Kageri, from the Toki ninja clan show up to fight him and reclaim a family heirloom sword that Raizo won from their father, Kagemaru, by defeating him in battle. Takashi isn’t willing to part with it because of a sentimental attachment to it. Unfortunately the girls learn Takashi’s weak spot and his friend Atsuko Yamaguchi & Ayasumi-sensei agree to help him train to overcome it…assuming Atsuko’s mom doesn’t die of heart failure first.
(NOTE: It appears that sometime in 2002, ADV Films acquired the license to bring this OAV to [hopefully] a wider audience!)
