Kodomo No Omocha TV 1-4
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1999 Anime Guide)
"Ju-kyu ji no news…". This is quite possibly the most bizarre anime I’ve had the pleasure of seeing, though it can occasionally get very dramatic. Upon first seeing the character designs, I initially wrote this off as a cheap Marmalade Boy ripoff (tell me Sana & Hayama don’t bear at least a passing resemblance to Miki & Yuu), but the two shows are worlds apart & it has a charm all its own. Last year the heavens shined upon me and I aquired a Buruccha much to Zack’s envy (the beeper toy seen in ep1—too bad it takes 2 of them to page each other or this would be mine and Zack’s paging system at Necro99). I figured I’d celebrate by reshowing the 1st 4 eps which everyone missed last year.
Sana Kurata is the star of Child’s Toy tv show (hosted by Zenjiro) who’s always late because her internal clock must be running on JST (Jareth Standard Time) has a ‘pimp’ named Rei-kun who’s a VERY cautious driver. Her mother is an Aoki-award wining writer with a penchant for avoiding her publisher’s deadlines (we should have her join JURAI, she’d fit right in) and has a squirrel named Maro-chan who lives in her elaborate hairstyles. She lives an atypical lifestyle but should be relatively happy…if it weren’t for her classmate Hayama. Akito Hayama is the devil. Sana even makes the mistake of angering him by pointing this out on TV. He’s blackmailing 2 teachers with a picture he has of them fraternizing. Luckily she develops an alliance with Tsuyosho Ohki, Hayama’s bespectacled best friend with a temper (don’t disrespect his mama!). Sana’s rap breaks are the coolest thing this side of Terrence & Phillip’s hip-hop version of Uncle F**ka. Someday maybe I’ll sell my own liver to finance the purchase of the LD box sets. (NOTE: one down, one more to go…box set that is, I still have my liver...until the evil sentient deathsporks come to remove it from me)
Kodomo No Omocha TV 16-19
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 2000 Anime Guide)
Komawari’s most sugar-overdosed actress is back this year for 4 more episodes. Sometimes this hyperactive series can be very dramatic & I’ve picked episodes that illustrate this. It seems there’s a big controversy over Mama’s recently published story that exposes a family secret which could tear mother and daughter apart. Say what you want about them as a couple, but it’s nice to see that Hayama is there for Sana at a time when she truly needs him.
