Mobile Suit Gundam movies I, II, III
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1999 Anime Guide)
Long before the days of Upside-Down A Gundam, Gundam Tailfin, G Robot, Gundam Failure, Gundam Y Bother, 0069, Snoring Gundam Zzzzz and that Counterclockwise Shard film, there was the original 43 episode Mobile Suit TV series which was later edited into 3 feature films. How we all miss the bygone days of what Tony, Sean & Roy refer to as the ‘line-limit method’ of animation. Apparently, they were paying animators by the # of lines they drew and this made curved lines more cost-effective, hence all the mecha moved like bend-ems figures. A complete disregard for the laws of physics didn’t matter because it had drama…it also had more toys and model kits to buy than you could begin to afford. It would go on to spark numerous debates among gaijin as to how the romanized names were to be spelled -- which would degenerate into flailing fistfights where geeks would tear off each others foam latex Vulcan ears (j/k). MS Gundam gave us Amuro Rey, Char Aznable, a tragic love triangle and countless battles where stuff blew up. Oh, just watch it already and return to your pre-Macross mecha roots!
