Steam Detectives
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1999 Anime Guide)
Heat + water = steam, this is very important! Someday steam may save the world! …or so every anime parody poking fun at Ben Dunn always says. Based on the manga of Kia Asamiya (Silent Mobius, Nadesico), this anime takes place in Steam City, a gaslight setting with rampant crime committed under the ever-present blanket of mist. Detective Narutaki solves cases with help from his assistant, nurse Ling Ling Hsu and Goriki, a megamaton robot with Dr. Hsu’s brain in him.
I’m not fluent in japanese, but from what I can tell, the fashion world has been invaded by giant metal buttons which threaten to adorn every outfit in sight and it’s up to the steam detectives to stop it…(sorry, couldn’t stop myself). Narutaki must battle such arch-nemeses as Phantom Knight (who looks a bit like an evil version of Moldiver) and some sentai-costumed girl whose name I don’t know (because none of the freakin’ websites have any useful info). He also has a gun with many useful attachments like drill bits (*cough* Condor Joe). His job is made all the more difficult by the fact that steam-powered robots come with a built-in smokescreen. Watch this neat-looking retro giant robot anime and figure out the plot for yourself (or better yet, just make one up).
