Toire No Hanako-san
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1998 Anime Guide)
This obscure half hour movie from ’96 caught us completely by surprise. Zack’s friend picked it up on a whim…& then the madness spread. Who’d have thought this would top our list of truly bizarre comedies (along with the likes of Takamaru). Don’t let the simplistic Doraemon-esque art style fool you, once the 3rd grade substitute teacher arrives it gets much better!
The bathroom of an elementary school is haunted by Hanako-san, a friendly ghost who just wants a playmate. There’s also a dimensional portal behind the door to stall #2 where the king and his band of evil ghosts dwell. The day after a classmate has a run-in with the ghost he’s absent from class as is their teacher. This marks the arrival of an ominous substitute teacher, Iwayama Iwao, a beastly man who can’t fit through the door. Will the kids ever see Yoshiko-sensei again & who is this behemoth who plows through students like a zamboni to confront those who dare interrupt his class? "Yama no, anata no, sore to…".
