The closest I can translate the title is "Great Chase for the Jewel of Darkness". CSC: ATD contains a scene almost as painful as the one in ‘Something About Mary’. The plot has similarities to both 3X3 Eyes & South Park’s ‘Mecha Streisand’ episode. Dr. Hecson is delivering the missing stone from a pair of gems (which can unleash an ancient evil) to an organization of lethal ladies when it’s stolen by a trio of (stereotypically flamingly gay) performers who belong to a secret sect sworn to protect the stones. It falls into Shin Chan’s possession & baby sister (Himawari) swallows it, thus involving the Nohara family in the mad dash to recover it.

This year we’re showing a 1 hour compilation of some of our favorite demented antics of the world’s most obnoxiously mischievous grade schooler (1/2 hour episodes are always comprised of 3 shorts). Highlights include Shinnosuke accidentally shaving off part of his sleeping father’s eyebrows and the ensuing coverup & the TV special of his favorite mecha show, Kuntam Robo (a take off on Gundam & Giant Robo, like Nadesico’s ‘Gekiganger’ parody of 70’s robot shows).

We’ve been showing Shin-chan for 4-5 years now ever since I found that eyebrows episode (‘To-chan Mayunage ga nai zo!’), but due to the early Saturday morning times it got shown, nobody really noticed it until last year where I feared for my life as die hard CSC fans stalked me for copies. Depending on your taste this crudely animated series is a waste of cel paint or the most brilliant warped comedy to grace the television. Shinnosuke Nohara is an obnoxious little brat with a penchant to taking everything in the EXTREMELY literal sense -- much to the dismay of his mother. Actually if you see him around his salaryman dad, you start to see which side of the family he takes after. Last season he got a baby sister named Himawari and that is where we are taking the stories from for this year’s installment. One of them involves an old lady trying to protect her boss lady’s fresh cement from his ignoble desecration.
