Serial Experiments Lain TV 1-7
synopsis by Jareth David (from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 1999 Anime Guide)
This hard-to-categorize show puts the ‘psycho’ in psychodrama. When did Lynch & Cronenberg start making anime? "Lain" and "Perfect Blue" seem to be vying for the ‘most messed-up, surrealistic anime of the year’ award. Lain gets e-mail from dead people…all the time. After junior high student Chisa commits suicide, Lain and her classmates start getting e-mail from her. Using her new Navi (a powerful computer which seems to be used mostly for some kinda voice-enabled AOL chat room gone bad—kinda like Jason’s computer minus Quicken), Lain finds herself drawn into the recreation of a dangerous experiment by the mysterious Knights.
What is this Phantoma corridor game all her little cyber-stalkers are hooked on? Are her family really her family? Is she the real Lain? The once-shy Lain seems to be changing…but is it entirely a good thing? Brilliant new series from Pioneer…especially if you really like numerous static background shots of electrical power lines every episode.
