Read Or Die OAVs 1-2
synopsis by Jareth David
(from J.U.R.A.I.'s Necronomicon 2001 Anime Guide)
I know the title sounds like a harsh state-enforced reading program by a radical group of Reading Is Fundamentalists. What cool supernatural power HASN’T been done to death yet? How about a heroine who can do stuff with paper? She can make paper airplanes, make paper form into giant piles faster than a bureaucrat, even give her enemies nasty papercuts. Ooh sounds thrilling, doesn’t it? She’d be like the Megami no Kami or something. Name her something cheesy that signifies her love of books, like Yomiko Readman. Give her a cluttered room full of stuff like the boy from Mahoro-matic or Jareth’s room or Roy’s floor where you have to remember how to spell the name of God in Hebrew to keep your footing (‘only the pentium man shall pass’). Then partner her with a woman moves like Motoko Kusanagi or Trinity & phases through objects & call her Ms. Deep. Then make them fight a bunch of villains resurrected with superpowers from some crazy genetics project (that outdoes Jurassic 1-55 …or is that $$) that’ll give the girls a run for their money. Then have them upset our heroine by stealing books. This is actually one of the best OAV series in YEARS! One of the new shows that REALLY got us back into anime. Why bother trying to convince you with a serious synopsis? Just watch it! |

(NOTE: ROD 3 came out since this was written and the final episode was every bit as good as the previous two. Buy it as soon as it's released in America!) |
